Kyotofish 慶有魚

교토 Higashiyama

Miya 宮

Kyotofish works with leading Kyoto designers and craftspeople to create exceptional machiya stays that preserve the spirit of the city while offering modern comfort.

Miya is set in Miyagawachō, one of Kyoto’s most celebrated kagai (geisha districts). This atmospheric neighbourhood has flourished since the Edo period and is associated with locations featured in Memoirs of a Geisha. In the evening, lanterns glow beneath bamboo blinds, traditional latticework lines the streets, and geiko and maiko may be seen travelling between engagements.

A RESTORED FORMER TEAHOUSE

Miya was originally a teahouse where geisha could be invited to perform. Japanese craftspeople carefully restored the building, preserving its historic character and Kyoto atmosphere while introducing contemporary comfort. The result is a warm and tranquil private retreat that evokes another era.

ARCHITECTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

Above the entrance passage is a dramatic double-height hibukuro, a hallmark of an authentic Kyoto machiya. Traditionally, this open space allowed cooking smoke and heat to escape, helped slow the spread of fire, improved ventilation, and brought daylight deep into the house. Sunlight now fills the interior, creating an open and distinctly Japanese atmosphere.

Beneath the hibukuro is a modern open-plan kitchen designed to complement the traditional architecture. The red-carpeted area upstairs once served as a performance space. The landscaped courtyard has been carefully composed in layers, offering a peaceful garden view from the bath.

COMFORT AND SLEEPING

The entire two-storey machiya is reserved for your group and accommodates up to eight guests. Two tatami bedrooms offer a traditional Japanese sleeping experience, while the principal tatami bedroom features a king-size bed—an unusually generous feature for a Kyoto machiya stay.

KITCHEN AND BATHING

The kitchen includes a refrigerator, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, cookware, tableware, and utensils, making it easy to prepare ingredients from nearby food markets. The bathrooms include toiletries, a hair dryer, and towels.
